If Saturday is for the boys, then I think it's only fair that today's edition of Music Monday is for the girls. It may not be very macho of me, but I'm not afraid to say that I've got a real soft spot for the songs and artists I'm sharing with you today.
Until the advent of Jessica Maros and Tyler James of Escondido, Indie Folk had never been so fashionable as they serenade us with their solid lineup of endearing tracks. There are no weakpoints in their discography as far as I can tell, and Escondido spends a lot of time on shuffle in my studio.
First Aid Kit
Johanna Söderberg and Klara Söderberg are the sisters who make up the Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit. I was first introduced to these beautiful songs when they were taken in by the Saddle Creek Records family with their sophomore album, "The Lion's Roar" which was produced by Omaha legend Mike Mogis. My favorite song of theirs to date is the hauntingly gorgeous "Fireworks" off of their album "Ruins".
With such a long and productive music career, Jenny Lewis stands out to me as one of my favorite female musicians and songwriters. Her lyrics are simple, straightforward, and even a bit silly at times. Her voice is pretty, but plain. Yet, there is something exceedingly and consistently genuine that really resonates with this music lover and elevates her in my mind above others who may be more talented by any objective standard. My favorites from Jenny Lewis are the earlier Rilo Kiley albums "The Execution of All Things" and "More Adventurous".
